Weston-Super-Mare “OWN CHOICE” Contest

The 44th “Own Choice” Contest WILL BE HELD ON Sunday 20 May 2012 at the Winter Gardens Pavilion, Royal Parade, Weston-super-Mare

 

Entry to the Contest is open to ALL bands, with 2012, national grading being recognised.
Entry Fee is £40.00 and should be sent to John Woods with a completed entry form.  Cheque’s made payable to North Somerset Council.  Entry Fees are NOT refundable.

 

The closing date for entries is:  Saturday 7th April 2012

 

The sections will be as follows:

 

FOURTH/THIRD/SECOND/FIRST & CHAMPIONSHIP (Combined)

 

Entries as usual will be accepted on a ‘FIRST COME FIRST SERVED’ basis.  It is advisable to get your entry submitted as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

 

An unmarked copy of your Test Piece must be provided for the use of the Adjudicators.  Details of your Test piece selected must be advised by email no later than 6th May 2012 to the Contest Administrator johnwoods@tiscali.co.uk  This information will be kept confidential but advised anonymously to Adjudicators so that they can be best prepared in the interest of themselves and the band, and in the event of new material being chosen.  Any band intending to perform a piece of music that has been adapted or re-arranged must submit a copy of the required license to the contest controller before the day of the contest.

 

The draw for the FOURTH Section will take place at 0845hrs and the contest will commence at 0945hrs.  The draw times for the other sections will be announced when the entries are complete.

 

The band drawn first will be required to play the National Anthem.

 

RULES

 

Bands should note that the contest is held as near as possible to the National Rules and also the British and Welsh Registries.  As there is no provision in the rules for the use of ‘Deputy players’ in ‘Own Choice’ contests, the borrowing of players will be subject to Temporary 1-day transfer of players, as per the official transfer form – maximum 4 players per band.

 

REGISTRATION

  • Registration cards MUST be presented at the registration point on the contest day and will be verified against a registry computer print-out prepared by the respective Registries.
  • Only registered players on the print-out and official transfer form will be permitted to play.
  • The number of registered players permitted to play, is 25 brass players plus percussionists as required by the band.
  • It will be the responsibility of band secretaries to:
    • Ensure that registration cards are complete in every detail, including franking for the current year with up-to-date signature of the player and a valid effective date.
    • Ensure the latest registry print –out supplied to individual bands is correct

TROPHIES AND PRIZE MONIES

 

Cash Prizes for positions 1st, 2nd, 3rd.  Special Awards and Trophies as per programme.  Band secretaries will be responsible for the safe return of trophies, duly engraved, in clean and acceptable condition in readiness for the 2013 Contest.

 

PERCUSSION

 

The following percussion will be provided – NO SUBSTITUTES WILL BE ALLOWED:

 

            4 Timpani                                 1 Concert Bass Drum               1 Xylophone

            1 Vibraphone                            1 Tam Tam                             1 set of tubular bells

            5 piece drum kit including cymbals

 

All other percussion items, together with sticks, beaters etc, are the responsibility of the competing band. Adrian Evans of Ev-Entz will be in attendance throughout the day.

 

CHILD PROTECTION/YOUNG PEOPLE & VULNERABLE ADULTS

 

Bands accept full responsibility for all players aged 18 and under, and any vulnerable adults in membership of their band.  No crèche facilities are provided so players children will not be allowed to remain unaccompanied in the Band room area whilst parents are playing.  It is the responsibility of bands and parents to allocate responsible persons to supervise child players and not the organisers of this event.

 

SECURITY

 

Apart from when being used in connection with the Contest, no musical instruments will be allowed into the Contest Hall.  A designated area has been reserved for them, and whilst there they are the sole responsibility of the band concerned.  North Somerset Council/Parkwood Leisure/SWBBA accepts no responsibility for damage or theft to any instruments or property whilst on Council premises.

 Additional Notes - Rehearsal failities are available at Priory School which is ideally situated near the M5 mororway.  The School has plenty of space for several bands to rehearse at the same time, including two soundproofed studios.  Please telephone Bev Baily on 01934 529385 or 511411 to arrange.

Please note that to obtain the admission tickets at the concession price, they must be purchased before the day of the Contest by submitting the application and remittance to the Winter Gardens' Box Office.  If not purchased beforehand, tickets will be charged at the full ragte on the day.

If any players required disabled access to the stage, please let John Woods know at least one week prior to the Contest.
